The Banned Histories

Preamble

If the project this blog is mainly about is meant to contain a somewhat coherent internal timeline, there are a lot of things that just aren't going to fit. Take slasher movies, for instance: Halloween alone has four, maybe five mutually exclusive timelines. Alien isn't any better, with several timelines outside of the films (and quite frankly I prefer Dark Horse's take on the Xenoverse over Disney's.) Even video games aren't immune: Castlevania has two video game timelines, plus the Netflix shows, and how the fuck is Bram Stoker's classic Dracula novel supposed to fit in this universe anyway as Castlevania: Bloodlines implies?

On top of that, there's all kinds of media that wouldn't fit for other reasons. I like zombie games and movies, but too often they're about the end of the world. You can easily say that the events of George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead depicts an isolated incident, easily put down by heavily armed militia already prepared for violence in the turbulent 1960s. Return of the Living Dead years later would seem to confirm this idea, reframing Romero's movie as a sort of propaganda film to fictionalize actual events, thereby keeping secret the fact that real zombies were captured in 1968 and stuffed into heavy drums. But how do you square, say, Dawn of the Dead? You don't. That is, very clearly, the end of a civilized society, transforming the world we know into a land of the dead. And the same is true for so many zombie stories. Could Dying Light fit in the List? Sure. Dying Light 2: Stay Human, not so much.

Or maybe the end of the world comes along in a much more predictable fashion: nuclear warfare, or some kind of virus that makes COVID-19 look like hay fever. Whatever the case, it all goes in a separate list. Alternate pasts, bad futures, failed timelines, apocalypses: they all fall under the purview of this page, The Banned Histories. The name derives from the Alien Universe Timeline's page for the non-canon Xenoverse stuff (including all that Dark Horse stuff, phooey.) Here you will see everything from the living dead to alternate continuities to timelines that went way off the tracks.

Letters from the end of the world.

It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here.

Somewhere along the line, someone royally screwed up. Alternative histories, with alternative facts.

Sometimes I have to pick a continuity and stick with it. This is where the others go.

Or vampires. Or mutants. Or ghosts, that one time.
