Failed Timelines

"Imagine a world where the future as we know it never happened. Plagued by crime, terrorism, pollution, racial conflict, religious fundamentalism, public apathy, failure of government, an increasing gap between rich and poor, and science fiction produced by Irwin Allen."

TuMok, Plan 7 of 9 from Outer Space

Somewhere along the line, the world we know, or the world as it should be, went terribly awry. Someone screwed up somewhere, and now the Nazis are running the world, or an impossibly ancient eldritch nightmare has escaped its prison and is threatening to eat reality itself. You've stumbled onto a failed timeline. This is thematically distinct from Bad Future or even post-apocalypse in that we're presented an alternate history where the story's present is unquestionably less desirable than our own established reality, and crucially you don't need an apocalypse or some future date to fall under this category. All you need is a butterfly flapping its wings...

[Note: this list is pretty sparse right now. It'll grow over time.]
